Forschung & Entwicklung

The EquiEye is an innovative, multifunctional ophthalmic diagnostic device developed as part of a research project in collaboration with the Chemnitz Institute of Mechanical and Plant Engineering (ICM e.V.) and the Research Centre for Medical Technology and Biotechnology (fzmb GmbH).

The focus was on developing a compact device for the precise and safe diagnosis of the equine eye. The project successfully combined the examination methods of pupillography/pupillometry, electroretinography (ERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) into a single compact measurement system.

This enables an objective assessment of the animal’s entire visual system, for example when purchasing a new horse, during follow-up examinations or to assess fitness for competition. Currently, the product has been trialled and clinically tested exclusively for use on horses.

During the development of the EquiEye, particular emphasis was placed on reducing stress for the animal and ensuring that the examination could be carried out in a cost-effective manner. This means that diagnostics can be performed directly on-site, for example in the horse’s familiar stable environment. As a rule, only light sedation is required. There is no need for time-consuming transport to a clinic or for general anaesthesia, as might be necessary for MRI scans, for example.

Furthermore, the system delivers objective and meaningful results in just around 15 minutes per eye. This enables a rapid and well-founded assessment whilst reducing the organisational burden.

Another advantage is the integrated database structure: it allows for clear documentation and the direct comparison of examination results over time, thereby supporting reliable monitoring of the animal’s progress.
